Where tartar comes from
Soft plaque that isn't removed in time absorbs minerals from saliva and hardens. Tartar most often forms on the inner surface of the lower front teeth and the outer surface of the upper back teeth, near the salivary ducts. Gums under tartar become inflamed and may bleed.
How ultrasound works
A thin tip vibrates at a high frequency while spraying water. The vibration breaks up the tartar, and the water washes away the fragments and cools the tooth. The dentist works carefully without damaging the enamel.

Does tartar removal hurt?
Most people feel vibration and a water spray but no pain. Exposed tooth necks may react to cold water. If it becomes uncomfortable, tell the dentist — they'll pause, change the setting or offer local anaesthetic.
Tartar below the gums
If there are deposits below the gumline as well as above it, removing them is part of periodontal hygiene. It's done after a gum assessment.

Frequently asked questions
Can I remove tartar at home?
No. Scrapers and "whitening" pastes won't remove tartar but can damage gums or enamel. Only a dentist can remove it safely.
Will there be gaps between my teeth after scaling?
Tartar may have been filling gaps that already existed. After cleaning they simply become visible. Teeth don't move apart because of it.
Why are my teeth sensitive after scaling?
The tartar was covering the necks of the teeth. Sensitivity usually passes in a few days. If it's strong, the dentist may suggest products for sensitive teeth or fluoride.
