Why braces need special care
Brackets, wires and ligatures trap food and plaque. A regular toothbrush struggles to reach all the areas around them. If plaque stays for long, white demineralisation spots can appear on the enamel and the gums can become inflamed.
How cleaning with braces works
- The braces stay on: the dentist cleans around the brackets and under the wire.
- AirFlow is especially handy here: the jet reaches places instruments can't.
- If needed, tartar is removed with ultrasound.
- Afterwards the dentist checks the enamel and may suggest fluoride.
How often
Every 3–4 months is common advice, but the interval is set by the dentist together with your orthodontist. It depends on your home care and how quickly plaque builds up.
Aligners and retainers
Aligners make brushing easier because they come out. But plaque also builds up on the aligners, and teeth under them are in contact with bacteria for longer. Regular professional hygiene is still needed. Aligners themselves aren't cleaned with AirFlow — the dentist will advise how to care for them.
Home care

- a single-tuft brush for areas around brackets;
- interdental brushes for under the wire;
- a water flosser as an extra, not a replacement for brushing.
