Why you need professional hygiene
Plaque that stays on the teeth gradually hardens into tartar. Tartar can't be brushed off at home. Bacteria multiply beneath it, gums become inflamed, and bleeding and bad breath appear.
Professional hygiene:
- removes hard tartar and soft plaque;
- removes stains from coffee, tea and tobacco;
- leaves the tooth surface smooth so plaque sticks less;
- lets the dentist spot decay and gum problems early.
What it includes
The standard steps are a check-up, ultrasonic scaling, AirFlow cleaning, polishing and advice. Fluoride is added if indicated. All the steps are described on the Comprehensive cleaning page.
Who shouldn't put it off
- people whose gums bleed when brushing;
- people with braces, aligners or implants;
- anyone about to have treatment, prosthetics or whitening;

How often
Every six months is the most common advice. But the interval depends on how fast you build up tartar, the state of your gums and any orthodontic appliances. For some people once a year is enough, others need a cleaning every three or four months. More in How often to have a professional cleaning.

Tell the dentist about the pain first. Sometimes treatment comes first and the cleaning is postponed; sometimes a cleaning helps the dentist examine the teeth better.
Can I have a cleaning during pregnancy?
Often yes, but the dentist decides after a consultation, taking into account your stage of pregnancy and how you feel. Please mention it when booking.
How long does it take?
It depends on the amount of deposits and the steps involved. The administrator can give you an estimate when you book.
