Is professional cleaning painful?

The honest answer: mostly not. But how it feels depends on the state of your teeth and gums.

What you'll feel

  • Ultrasound: vibration, noise and a water spray. It can be uncomfortable near the gums if they're inflamed.
  • AirFlow: a jet of warm water with a slight tingle and a slightly salty or neutral taste of powder.
  • Polishing: light pressure and rotation.

What affects sensitivity

  • exposed tooth necks;
  • inflamed, swollen gums;
  • a lot of tartar, especially below the gums;
  • thin or damaged enamel.

How to make it more comfortable

  1. Tell the dentist in advance if your teeth react to cold.
  2. Agree on a hand signal to pause.
  3. A few weeks before your visit you can start using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth — unless your dentist advises otherwise.
  4. If cleaning below the gums may be painful, the dentist will offer local anaesthetic.

After the cleaning

Slight sensitivity to cold may last a few days. Gums that were inflamed may bleed a little. If discomfort is strong or doesn't pass, see your dentist. Fluoride sometimes helps.

In Lutsk, we recommend having this procedure at the dental clinic “Dentika” (Dmytra Ivashchenka St, 1a).
