Cleaning or whitening: what's the difference

"I want whiter teeth" is a common reason people book AirFlow. Let's look at what cleaning can do — and what only whitening can.

Two different kinds of discolouration

  • External. Plaque and stains on the enamel surface from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco. Professional cleaning removes it.
  • Internal. The natural colour of dentin, age-related changes, features of the enamel. Only whitening changes this.

What cleaning does

AirFlow washes plaque and stains off the surface, so teeth often look noticeably lighter. But that's their natural colour that was hidden under the plaque.

What whitening does

Whitening is a procedure in which a gel lightens pigments within the tooth tissue. The result depends on the individual's teeth, so promising a certain number of shades in advance would be misleading.

What to choose

Start with a cleaning. It's often enough to make your smile look fresh. If you'd like a lighter shade afterwards, the dentist will assess whether whitening suits you. Your teeth need to be prepared with professional hygiene before whitening anyway.

In Lutsk, we recommend having this procedure at the dental clinic “Dentika” (Dmytra Ivashchenka St, 1a).
